Lesson 07 of 07
Investing and risk
Return and risk are the same conversation. This lesson is about owning a small piece of everything, waiting, and knowing which money is allowed to be in the market at all.

The short version
- Boring beats clever. Owning hundreds of companies through an index fund beats picking one, and the waiting is most of the work.
- Fees compound too. 1% a year taken from a growing balance can quietly eat a fifth of what you retire with. It is charged every year, on a bigger number each time.
- Risk is time-shaped. Money you need this year does not belong in the market. Money you will not touch for a decade can ride out a bad one.
- Diversification is the free lunch. One basket, many companies, so no single failure takes you down with it. It is the only risk reduction that costs nothing in expected return.
Buy the whole market cheaply, keep buying, and do not sell because a headline scared you.
